Recently, when I opened my wardrobe, I was left uninspired. My basic dresses and kurtas didn’t seem to spark any joy in me. So, I trotted across my house to go through my mother’s wardrobe, in hopes of picking out something exciting. As I raided her stash, I couldn’t help but marvel at the variety her clothing choices offered. When I was a child, I was obsessed with my mother’s wardrobe. It seemed to hold magic and secrets for me back then, and in some ways, it still does. Her gota patti hand-embroidered silk kurtas, her patola dupattas, her zari sarees, her chanderi suits: I’ve admired and fallen in love with them all.
Now, while my mother’s dressing sense does strike a balance between ethnic and contemporary wear, she does often lean toward traditionals and doesn’t shy away from experimenting with them either. In the past, she has reached out for palazzos and dhoti pants, and went as far as styling an ethnic crop top and skirt ensemble for a wedding for me. That’s one of the things I love about her sense of style. She zeros in on what would suit her body type and what she can effortlessly carrying off while keeping in mind the latest trends and fads. And this is particularly true for her everyday ethnic wear wardrobe, which is why every now and then, I feel the need to rummage through her collection.
And in lieu of Mother’s Day, I decided to take my mom shopping on Nykaa Fashion. Ahead, I share the few items that my mother shopped for, which I’m sure I’m going to love borrowing, well, more like stealing really!
