Khara Kapas, meaning ‘pure cotton’ in Hindi, is a label launched by fashion designer Shilpi Yadav. Yadav earned a Bachelor’s in Graphics and later a Master’s in Apparel from NID, and also attended FIDM Los Angeles for a short period. Before starting Khara Kapas, she worked for three years with a few fashion houses. The label started with the belief that well-designed clothes made from pure fabrics can bring happiness into people’s everyday lives.
In pure materials, earthy tones, and basic Indian themes for prints, their design philosophy centres around the idea of simplicity, clean cuts, and comfortable forms. Khara Kapas, as a brand, has always strived to return to the essentials, to the simplicity of Indian design. They collaborate with the best artists and fabrics to create a timeless fashion narrative. Yadav prefers focusing on her roots, the things she’s seen and felt as she’s grown up, and utilising her drawings to portray these visions and emotions.
The brand is known for producing high-quality, handcrafted goods made using homegrown materials that will survive for decades while still looking timeless. They collaborate closely with small artists all over the country and their business has always relied on small weavers.
They work with a variety of brands and influencers, and have been featured in publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and many others. Mini Mathur, Gauhar Khan, Divya Bhushan, Athiya Shetty, Kritika Kamra, Shilpa Rao, and Kubra Sait are among the celebrities who have purchased from them and helped spread the word in Bollywood.
