Masaba Gupta, an Indo-Carribean fashion designer, gained success in the world of fashion at a very young age. Gupta made a promising debut at Lakme Fashion Week at the mere age of 19. She started her eponymous label, House of Masaba in 2009 after graduating from S.N.D.T Women’s University.
Masaba Gupta is recognised for mastering the fusion trend. Owing to her cultural identity, inherited from her mother Neena Gupta and father Sir Viv Richards, Gupta presents House of Masaba as an India proud label with a Carribean heart. The blend of these two varied cultures can be seen in her motifs and prints.
The signature style that Gupta channels is quirky and experimental- breaking stereotypes with fluid and fuss-free silhouettes for the modern Indian woman. With the anytime anywhere ensembles, House of Masaba is bridging the gap between Haute and Pret Couture.
Known for experimenting with saris, drapes, dupattas and bright colours, one of Masaba Gupta’s earliest inventions was the pocket sari. Her label has a broad portfolio, ranging from destination wedding collections to party collections and resort wear. Her collections consist of bold prints, which seem like a breath of fresh air in an industry where embroidery and zardosi work dominates.
In the past, Masaba Gupta has collaborated with an original HBO series, launching the Masaba X GOT capsule collection. The Game of Thrones Masaba collection presented womenswear, menswear, jewellery in designs inspired by its theme and characters.
Gupta’s diffusion label stocks at luxury international shopping destinations in places like Dubai, the Maldives, United Kingdom, the United States of America and Bangkok, which has helped create a global presence for the brand.
She is the first and only Indian designer to have a series made on her life. The Masaba Masaba Netflix series is inspired by her personal life and fashion journey and also celebrates her special bond with her mother and actress Neena Gupta.
Revered as the ‘Queen of Prints’, Gupta won the spot on the Forbes 30 under 30 list in the year 2017. Over the years, she has been honored with many prestigious awards. Among them are ‘Best Emerging Designer’ by Cosmopolitan India in 2011, the ‘Best Designer’ award by L’Oréal Femina Women’s Awards in 2012, the ‘Reebok Fit to Fight’ award by Reebok, and the ‘Devi’ award by The Sunday Standard for Dynamism & Innovation in December 2017.
