This year, on the 5th of October, Navratri will start to be celebrated across India. While the festival marks the worship of goddess Durga, the festival will also be celebrated with special foods, dancing with dandiyas and following the special colour theme, of wearing 9 different colours on 9 different days. The significance of these colours varys on the basis of the days, but it is believed that when worn, these colours bring prosperity, blessings and good luck.
The colours, namely orange, white, red, royal blue, yellow, green, grey and purple, are worn in this order, one for each of the 9 days. And to help you frolic during the festivities carefree, we have hand-picked a curation of outfits from Nykaa Fashion which offer festive outfits and accessories, all the right mix of traditional and contemporary. Scroll on to have a look!
Day 1 – Orange
Start the celebrations off with orange, which is symbolic of energy and happiness. We have chosen this traditional chiffon Bandhani saree for its vibrancy. It features green and red patterns and a thin gold border for finishing touches. We suggest pairing it with these gold flats, metallic clutch and brass earrings for the orange to stand out and the metallic colours to complement each other.
Day 2 – White
For the colour which symbolises purity and peace, shift to this effortless set of yellow polka-dotted kurta and lehenga crafted from cotton. It also features traditional gota work that adds a subtle shine against the white. Throw in some metallic-accented accessories, such as these flats, this bag and these earrings to complete the look. While the flats feature colourful embroidery to add some fun, the bag and jewellery are all about adding glamour.
Day 3 – Red
As the colour symbolises beauty and fearlessness, we chose this bold and statement-making silk kurta set. It comes with a pyjama and dupatta, and features simple zari work, which lets the colour speak for itself. Team with a matching pair of red and yellow kolhapuris, intricately beaded clutch and these gold-toned drop earrings to match the traditional red and gold combination of the outfit.
Day 4 – Royal Blue
This colour signifies prosperity and good health, and lends itself well to this rich sharara set. The handmade piece is crafted from cotton, and comes with a maroon frill dupatta enhanced with gota flowers. Pair it beautifully with these gorgeous enamel chandbalis, pale blue embellished flats and embellished sling bags for that extra sparkle.
Day 5 – Yellow
Symbolic of happiness and light, yellow can be a chance to experiment with more fun yet casual and easy-going styles, such as this botanical, printed A-line kurta. It’s crafted from fine chanderi and features intricate floral prints. Pair it with strong and bold accessories to make it a multi-faceted look, like this gold bag, these textured mules and this silver and yellow, traditional cocktail ring.
Day 6 – Green
As green signifies new beginnings and growth, a nature-inspired floral print ticks the box completely. This salwars suit set comes with a pair of pants and a chanderi dupatta. Wear it with these Meenakari danglers, this pair of kolhapuris that add that pop of colour and this deep green leather sling bag that keeps the look modern.
Day 7 – Grey
An unusual festive colour in a sea of bright and jewel-tones hues, grey has its own strength and image of transformation during the festivities. We recommend this sublime sharara set, crafted from Chanderi and accented with striking silver Gota work. Style it best with this stunning silver cuff, a delicate, embellished clutch and these embellished mules for a look that’s traditional yet modern.
Day 8 – Purple
Before the festivities end, have some fun with this colour, which symbolises the power of the intellect and peace, by mixing and matching it with metallic shades. This lehenga set features a cotton lehenga with silver prints and gota work, and a dupatta. Play around with the metallic accents, with warm tones from the earrings, a mix of tones in this pair of juttis and and a statement-making velvet potli.
Day 9 – Peacock Green
Wrap up the festivities in peacock green, which stands for fulfillment of desires and wishes. This beautiful shaded silk Bandhani saree is befitting of the opportunity. It comes with a matching blouse piece. It can be worn effortlessly with these enamelled studs, these emerald juttis and this green and silver potli.
