Mirror Work
This form of embroidery, also known as Shisha, is executed by attaching small pieces of mirrors or reflective metal to fabric. While the embroidery is common across many South Asian regions, in India, the technique is practised far and wide. It varies between communities, from the Banjara and Rabari tribes in Central India to its more polished iterations in Gujarat, Kathiawar and Kuch. Contemporarily, this embroidery depicts traditional themes from socio-cultural histories from across the country. The mirrors are delicately placed and stitched in, and sometimes combined with other forms of embroidery to add dimension and depth to the clothing, while making sure it reflects light beautifully.
Gota Patti
Originating in Rajasthan, this embroidery technique uses applique. Small pieces of zari ribbon are applied onto the fabric with the edges sewn down to create elaborate patterns. The extensive process of embroidery takes place on fabrics such as georgette or bandhini to create different surface textures. The applique patterns are specific to the regions they are practised in, and each motif has its own unique significance and name. The motifs are usually inspired by natural elements such as flora and fauna. The resulting garment looks rich and decadent with luster, but is actually light and airy to wear.
Foil Print
Foil printing the technique used to permanently bond metallic paper to a fabric, to create a decorative finish. It is versatile because the technique allows a wide selection of colours and finishes, with gold and silver being the most popular choices. Foil stamping can also be used to achieve a variety of finishes, including matte, metallic, glossy, pearlescent, and holographic textures. The result is a beautiful two-dimensional but just as alluring shine, that doesn’t snag or scratch like other embroidery techniques.
