When I was growing up, I remember staring at my mom wrapping the perfect saree. It was mesmerizing the way six yards of beautiful silks, cottons, Chanderis or chiffons could make her look taller, sleeker, chicer and most importantly, ten times more graceful than usual. I would eye her closet full of gorgeous sarees greedily, knowing that all of them would someday be mine.
An Indian girl’s most precious heirlooms are her mother’s sarees, especially the ones that she wore on special occasions. Keeping the tradition on, now that I myself can buy our generation’s best, I’m thinking of making my saree wardrobe ‘heirloom’ ready – where certain pieces can be handed down over generations.

Sparkling Sarees
Glitter and sequins have become a part of expressing our joy and no one can ever have enough. These sparkling beauties caught my eyes, and I can’t wait to bring one home.
Printed Sarees
When compared with my mother’s sarees, prints have become much bolder nowadays with statement designer pieces walking the ramps every season. Here are some of my favourites.
Classic Gota Sarees
Gota Patti or just Gota is the craft of cutting golden ribbons in various patterns and stitching them onto solid fabrics creating stunning designs. A Rajasthani marvel, Gota sarees have always stood the tests of time.
Embroidered Sarees
Every state of India has a different craft that shines out. mostly embroidery crafts. Set on solid silks, I love embroidery work with golden threads, beads, mirrors along with the traditional ‘resham’.
Fringed, Ruffled and Tasselled Sarees
A bridge between the British inspired sarees of 1950s and 60s, and today’s designs, fringes, ruffles and tassles have won our hearts. From party staples to wedding favourites these are the sarees I’m looking forward to.
