Modesty may have just become mainstream but it has been integral to my style for as long as I can remember. My fondness for covered-up fashion, however, isn’t a result of my religion or faith but a personal preference which stems from the fact that even the slightest bit of breeze bothers me. If you’ve already conjured up an image of a closet brimming with dull basics, let me stop you right there. While I do subconsciously scout out separates with modest modifications (long sleeves, high necks and low hemlines), I’ve also found ways to keep them from being boring and they don’t include playful prints and bright colours. Below, I share a three-step, tried-and tested guide, which proves that covering up can also be cool.
Step 1: Start by loading up on layers
Layers have the power to dress up even the most pared-back pieces. Throw in a bomber jacket and it’ll up the cool quotient of your look. Want to add polish? Nothing does the job quite like a blazer.
Step 2: Then get into the details
We’re not talking about Boomerang-friendly details like ruffles and fringe. Sometimes, something as simple as a pretty pleat or piping can make all the difference.
Step 3: Find rich, feel-good fabrics
The material polishes or demolishes the outfit. Think the softest cottons for the day and sultry silk shirts for meetings or even date night. The rule to remember: when the silhouette is simple, bring the fabrics in focus.
