My early twenties were all about trying the latest trends, most of which were questionable to say the least. I had a collection of chokers that could’ve put the Kardashian’s to shame, wore off-the-shoulder tops that restricted movement and even had a brief encounter with bodycon dresses. My love for the second-skin silhouette was short-lived because it happened to coincide with a time that I was also experimenting with multiples cuisines (freshman 15 is not an urban myth). What I needed in my wardrobe was something forgiving to the not-so-occasional food babies, something in sync with my sartorial sensibilities that were shaping up to be classic over cool.
My search, which saw more misses than hits (said misses being a slew of skater dresses that died a death quicker than clogs), finally lead me to a style that I’ve come to swear by – the shirt dress. Not only is it form-flattering but there’s also an iteration for every occasion. Pair it with pinstripes and you have the hero of your work wardrobe, add some florals and you’re ready for brunch, pick a midnight hue and it’s even appropriate for the after-hours. Not convinced yet? Let me tell you a little about its multitasking powers. It converts into transitional layer when thrown open and if the length is right it can be worn as a button-down with distressed cut-offs and jeans. Long story shirt: It’s the dress to dote on and you should probably start shopping my finds below, stat. These are purchase you won’t regret making.
